Ì Schuttler's Laws of Communication provide organizations with the ability to assess and prevent potentially disastrous communication breakdowns. Just as the Myers Briggs inventory identifies individual traits, the Laws of Communication assess organizational communication traits – empowering organizations to harness the correlation between leadership and team member performance.”

What is the Supervisor Leadership & Communication Inventory (SLCI)?
The Law of Communication #1’s Supervisor Leadership & Communication Inventory (SLCI) is a convenient online survey designed to measure the effectiveness of an organization’s supervisor communication and employee performance. The diagnostic instrument develops an organizational profile using a stoplight (red, yellow, green) typology.

How can the SLCI help my organization?

  • Green Zone - Wellness Checks - Successful organizations use the assessment as a preventive instrument to conduct periodic, proactive ‘wellness checks’ of supervisor and employee performance.
  • Yellow Zone - Diagnosis & Treatment - Intermediate organizations use the assessment tool to ‘diagnose and treat’ communication concerns to strengthen the organization.
  • Red Zone - System-wide Intervention - Challenged organizations use the assessment as a system-wide intervention to identify risk factors that place the entire organization in danger.

As shown in the figure above, the SLCI is built around the highly significant correlation (r = .94) between supervisor communication and employee performance. As a result, use of the SLCI empowers organizations to reliably forecast employee behavior based on supervisor communication skill.

What should I look for when evaluating communication assessment tools?

Before investing in any performance evaluation process, organizational leaders should scrutinize the diagnostic tools available on the market. Misaligned or untested surveys have limited usefulness since they only generically assess communication problems and/or lack systematic testing. Before adopting an evaluation process, organizational leaders should carefully review what empirical data, if any, supports the reliability, validity, and predictive power of potential diagnostic tools.

How does the SLCI differ from other performance assessment tools?

In addition to its high predictive ability (r = .94), the SLCI has been empirically tested and validated. In a peer-reviewed study (Rouse, 2008), the online inventory demonstrated high reliability (Cronbach alpha = .99).

Let the Laws of Communication work for you by assessing senior leaders, mid-level supervisors, and front-line workers perceptions to determine gaps, strengths, and opportunities to improve employee performance.
